Ingredient Spotlight: The Collagen-Boosting Power of Peptides

Posted by Sandra Scott on

They’re one of the few skincare ingredients that both scientists and dermatologists agree really work.

Peptides show proven results in combatting the signs of aging - smoothing fine lines and wrinkles, improving elasticity and firming your skin.

But that’s not all…

They also encourage hydration – leaving your skin looking smoother and softer too.

And they do all this without causing irritation.

Which is why we chose the best peptide as one of the key ingredients in our Hydrating Daily Moisturiser.

Read on for how peptides can improve your skin, and why this ingredient is especially good for men.

Collagen-boosting power of peptides

The things that happen to our skin as we age – wrinkles, sagging skin, an uneven skin tone and a dull complexion - are largely the result of a breakdown in collagen.

But peptides have the power to stimulate collagen production – and preserve your skin's youthful appearance.

You see when collagen breaks down, peptides send a signal to our skin's cells, informing them to make more collagen to replace what we lose naturally as we get older – as well as through sun damage.

Why is collagen so important for your skin?

Collagen is the protein responsible for giving your skin structure.

It keeps your skin looking firm, smooth and healthy.

And improves elasticity so that your skin bounces back and remains plump.

It’s essentially the building block of your skin’s structure.

Collagen production decreases as we age and as it breaks down it leads to less firmness, more wrinkles and sagging skin.

The good news is that men have more of it.

Men's skin has about 20-30% more collagen than a woman’s, giving it much more structural support.

The bad news…

These collagen levels drop rapidly after about the age of 40 leading to skin losing its elasticity and firmness. Wrinkles start to form more quickly, becoming deeper and more noticeable.

Your skin becomes dehydrated and uneven. There’s a loss of firmness and your complexion can start to look dull.

Collagen is also broken down by too much sun exposure and eating a high sugar diet, so you need to keep an eye on those too.

Take action now

Using a moisturizer that includes peptides will essentially help trick your skin into boosting collagen production back to more healthy levels.

And not only does this combat the signs of aging that have already begun to appear but also helps keep future damage at bay.

It’s never too young to start, but it’s never too late either.

It is possible to rebuild your collagen levels.

This doesn’t happen overnight, but you will definitely see results with continued use of a peptide-based moisturizer.

How peptides improve your skin

Peptides counteract the usual signs of aging in three ways:

  • Reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles: By stimulating collagen production, peptides make your skin look smoother and plumper.
  • Locking in moisture: As we age, and collagen production decreases, it also causes dehydration. So when peptides boost collagen production, it also boosts your skin’s hydration levels. No more dry skin.
  • Alleviating inflammation: Antioxidants found in peptides help calm and soothe your skin, leading to less inflammation, and a clearer, more even skin tone.

Now for the science part…

 Peptide based moisturizer

Matrixyl® – the peptide in our Hydrating Daily Moisturizer

Matrixyl® (or to be exact palmitoyl pentapeptide-4) is the peptide that we chose for our Hydrating Daily Moisturizer.

It has an advantage over other peptides used in skin care, because its results are proven to be long-lasting.

In independent clinical tests, our Hydrating Daily Moisturiser was found to have a significant moisturising effect on the skin not just when it was first applied, but also two and four hours after application.

There was an increase in the cutaneous hydration rate of 63% after 2 hours and 71% after 4 hours.

Palmitoyl Pentapeptide-4 is a synthesized chain protein created by linking five amino acid peptides.

This chain stimulates collagen synthesis, skin repair and production of healthy elastin making for a smoother skin surface.

It also boosts the skin’s production of Hyaluronic Acid.

So Matrixyl® helps diminish wrinkles and increases hydration levels.

Independent in vitro studies demonstrated an increase in production of Collagen I by 212% and Hyaluronic Acid by 267%.

Whilst another six month in vivo study showed mean wrinkle depth was reduced by 17%, skin surface area containing deep wrinkles was reduced by 68%, skin surface area containing moderate wrinkles was reduced by 51%.

And Matrixyl® achieves these impressive results without causing any irritation.

Firm, hydrate and regenerate your skin

Along with peptides, our Hydrating Daily Moisturiser also contains other effective ingredients, such as moisturising and skin-repairing ingredients and antioxidants.

So you can expect fantastic results against multiple signs of skin ageing.

It’s super lightweight and absorbs quickly - without creating shine!

And like all of our products Hydrating Daily Moisturizer is specially designed for a man's skin.

Along with Matrixyl®, we’ve included:

☑️   Hyaluronic Acid to smooth and hydrate your skin, further reducing fine lines and wrinkles

☑️   Vitamin E to even your skin tone and regenerate your skin

☑️   Jojoba Oil to moisturize deeply, without leaving any shine. (It has an oil-regulating action too, so it’s perfect if you are prone to oiliness or acne)

☑️   Aloe Vera to soothe, hydrate and condition your skin

Are peptides better than retinol?

There’s no denying that Retinol is excellent at helping to speed up skin cell turnover. However, it’s a strong ingredient and can easily cause irritation. You have to be especially careful when you are in the sun.

Whereas peptides are much less invasive.

They have the power to increase collagen, hyaluronic acid, and other key components of the skin without any irritation (even in sensitive skins).

This leads to tighter, smoother, more hydrated skin – with no redness.

Do peptides tighten skin?

Peptides trigger collagen production.

Since collagen is what gives our skin structure, using peptide-based skincare increases your skins firmness and smoothness.

The Takeaway

Anti-aging peptides ramp up your skin’s collagen production, reducing fine lines and wrinkles.

It keeps your skin looking firm, smooth and healthy.

And improves elasticity so that your skin bounces back and remains plump.

And Matrixyl – the peptide in our Hydrating Daily Moisturizer – also boosts skin’s production of Hyaluronic Acid.

So our Hydrating Daily Moisturizer helps diminish wrinkles, increases hydration levels – and gives you smoother, firmer skin.
